Lessons

 Technique:

This is the foundation of all good singing, without exception. It is a gift you can give yourself, that will allow you to continue singing competently throughout your life.

I teach the anatomy of breathing, physical alignment, laryngeal function and aspects of kinetic systems, to help you learn to understand and connect your physiology to produce sound most effectively and sustainably.  This is necessary for all voicing.

In the studio, you may cross train between classical and contemporary voicing. This strategy increases flexibility and assists with tension issues, and can solidify technique across all genres. Importantly, it also can enhance your awareness of how your voice actually works.

Musicianship:

Everyone should read music. It’s another gift you can give yourself, that will last for life.

  • If required, we work on basic music theory throughout the term.

Performance:

Completely optional, and highly recommended.

Each year, you may participate in

  • studio recitals

  • student development masterclasses with local clinicians and collaborative pianists

Online or in-studio?

I offer both.

Each has advantages. .

In-studio:

  • I can see you and hear you best

  • recorded accompaniments are not necessary

Online:

  • may work best for your schedule

  • receiving your lesson online can let you avoid muscle tensions that can arise just from travelling to the studio

It is important to note: As part of the studio’s COVID-19 pandemic protocol, there may periods in which everyone’s lessons must be taken online.

Performances

  • performance creates progress.

  • highly recommended (and completely optional!)

  • the Masterclasses offered during term are a VERY good way to enhance your progress - you give a performance, which is by its nature a trial by fire for your technique, and then you receive feedback and a lesson from the guest clinician. You can go in terrified and come out empowered. I close the room for you if necessary.

  • student recitals are offered twice per term. Performance experience is a vital component of training. The more the better.
