Technique:

This is the foundation of all good singing, without exception. It is a gift you can give yourself, that will allow you to continue singing competently throughout your life.

the science of sound and support

During lessons, we work to strengthen the physical connection between your body and your voice. This is key to singing with freedom.

It’s good to know how your instrument works! There will be instruction in vocal tract and breathing functions, physical alignment, acoustics, resonance, and aspects of human kinetics, to help you learn to understand and use your physiology to produce sound most effectively and sustainably.

switching styles

We can make physical adjustments to our vocal instrument to suit the music we’re singing: classical vs. pop settings for example.

In the studio, you may cross train between classical and contemporary voicing. This strategy improves motor learning, increases flexibility and assists with tension issues, and can solidify technique across all genres.

sing to learn

During term, you’ll work on repertoire that you like to sing, and that suits your current developmental level and our goals for your progression.

Most students study classical and contemporary voicing exercises and repertoire - for young singers especially, this can be an educational introduction to a variety of musical genres.

Musicianship:

Everyone should read music. It’s another gift you can give yourself, that will last for life. Music literacy instruction is included for singers who don’t yet read music.

Ear training is included in lessons.

Sight singing is offered for every student who expresses an interest, and for students registering for exams.

Performance:

Performance creates progress. Highly recommended (and completely optional!).
You may participate in*
  • studio recitals (suspended for the pandemic)
  • student development masterclasses with local clinicians and collaborative pianists
  • On top of the performance education, recitals are a fun opportunity to dress up and perform in front of an audience.
The Masterclasses offered during term are a VERY good way to enhance your progress - you give a performance, which is by its nature a trial by fire for your technique, and then you receive feedback and a one-on-one with the guest clinician. *fees apply

When I was thinking about getting into voice lessons, a friend suggested that I go to Susan. I was really nervous because I have been very insecure about my voice for most of my life and was worried what a professional voice instructor might say.

    Lessons in-studio or Online?

    I offer both.

    Each has advantages. .

    In-studio:

    • I can see you best, particularly for alignment training

    • recorded accompaniments are not necessary

    Online:

    • you can study with me from anywhere in the world

    • may work best for your schedule

    • receiving your lesson online can let you avoid muscle tensions that can arise just from travelling to the studio

It is important to note: As part of the studio’s COVID-19 pandemic protocol, there may periods in which everyone’s lessons must be taken online.
